Driver LicenSing & Training Information

How to get your Commercial Driving Licence

Whistler Connection provide training to new employees to assist them in acquiring their BC Class 4 Unrestricted Licence. To begin training with us you must first check you are eligible to apply. The requirements are as follows;

  • Minimum age is 19 for a Class 1, 2 or 4 licence
  • A full-privilege B.C. driver's licence (Class 5 or 6) or an out-of-province equivalent (*Important Information below)
  • All fines and debts owing to ICBC must be paid.
  •  Less than four penalty point incidents in the past two years, plus no driving-related criminal convictions within the past three years.
  • Some medical conditions may prevent you from getting a commercial licence. Consult ICBC directly for more information.

(* If you have not held a BC Licence for 2 years then you have to acquire the relevant documentation from the country you have held a licence in prior to arriving in Canada. The documents must include your driving history and police records (penalty points etc and also any criminal convictions) Once you receive these documents you must submit them to ICBC for approval. Currently the wait times for approval is anything between 8 - 12 weeks. It is crucial to get these documents submitted as soon as possible to pursue a career with Whistler Connection. For more information please contact ICBC directly)

If you meet all the above requirements these are the steps to getting a Commercial Licence

Step 1 - Get your learners licence (Must be done prior to your first day of employment or training)
To get your learner's licence you'll need to pass a:
  • knowledge test
  • road signs test and
  • meet medical standards.

Now you are able to begin our in-house driver training program which will assist you in preparing for the practical portion of the commercial road test* including the Pre-trip Inspection. This test needs to be booked directly with ICBC.

(*Please note wait times for a test date can be 6-8 weeks in the Sea to Sky region. As soon as you have your learners licence we recommend calling ICBC to book the first available test slot at any Whistler, Squamish or Vancouver test center. Even when you have a test date book it is worth calling frequently to try and book a cancellation spot at an earlier date)

Step 2 - Get your full licence
To get your full licence, you'll need to pass a commercial road test, which includes a:
  • pre-trip inspection test (including air brakes if applicable)
  • road test, and
  • driver's medical exam

Step 3 - Medical Exam
Once you have passed your road test you will be required to pass a Medical which can be completed at any doctors office in BC. You have 45 days to complete this after you pass your road test.

Congratulations you are now a qualified Commercial Class 4 driver and are free to start driving for Whistler Connection!
